The graduate interiors program offers an immersive studio experience, producing well-rounded, ethical, innovative interior design professionals. The BS in Interior Architecture (IA) program at KU is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, professional education that prepares graduates to be leaders in the interior architecture and design professions. In October 2022, the IA Program received the CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) Candidacy status. Here we try to get to the bottom of the interior design vs. interior architecture debate by studying the roles of an interior designer and interior architect, and explain why the latter term is sometimes rather controversial. Nguyen’s SCAD colleague Tony Purvis would add that interior designers intentionally create spaces that we interact with on a daily basis, whether we realize it or not.
What does an interior designer do?

To find out more about becoming a legally-recognized architect, see our articles How to Become an Architect and How to Become an Architect in the UK. Or if you want to know the kind of things that are taught on a three-year interior architecture degree, you could have a look at these courses offered by UWE (in the UK) or UTS (in Australia). These courses are common all over the world, but some well-regarded examples include those at Chelsea College of Arts (in the UK), New York School of Interior Design (in the US), or RMIT (in Australia). In some American states interior designers are required to apply for a license, but this is the exception rather than the norm. To be an interior designer, you need to be well-versed in project management, especially project timelines.

The definition of an interior designer may differ slightly, depending on who you ask. “An interior designer is a professional who uses design—through functionality, materiality, safety and building codes, and much more—to support the human experience,” says Toni Gocke Wyre, chair of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). If you’re thinking about how to become an interior designer, there are many different ways to do it—and pursuing an interior design career doesn’t have to happen through a traditional inroad. Many interior designers begin their professions in completely different jobs before settling on the creative path. No matter what, though, there are certain foundational steps that make an expert’s work well informed. You'll learn also to benefit from support through one-to-one discussions, where you will be able to gain the insight of professional designers to help you develop your own 'voice'.

Ornament the space with artwork and unique furniture pieces from different design eras, and organize them around the space in whichever layout desired. For a more "balanced" interior scheme, choose complementary colors, shapes, and arrangements so that the space doesn't feel too messy. Inspired by nature, organic design trends promote natural forms through the material selection and furnishing, the weaving of interior and exterior spaces, and natural materials such as wood and brick. Other characteristics include minimal ornamentation, light organic forms, muted hues, translucent materials, and open floor plans.

According to Ramsey, many contemporary homes start with a modern shell and are then layered with unique pieces and finds. “It really is just that perfect juxtaposition of modern pieces blended with old-world finds and great art, and it doesn't all stay in one lane,” he says. Every design project begins with site analysis …start it with confidence for free!. Interior architects understand how to work with the ‘shell’ of a building and give it a second life inside. Like regular architects, they need a thorough understanding of building regulations and will be expected to use CAD and BIM software.
Interior architecture programs address the design issues intrinsic to the re-use and transformation of existing structures through both an innovative and progressive approach. Earnings of partners in established architectural firms may fluctuate because of changing business conditions. Some architects may have difficulty establishing their own practices and may go through a period when their expenses are greater than their income, requiring substantial financial resources. Remember, under the law an interior architect is just an architect who specializes in interiors.
Providing a general introduction and overview into the subject, and life as a student and professional.

“Post-COVID, there might have been a greater interest in an architecture style encountered while traveling.” This could explain the geographic stretch of searches, spanning styles rooted across countries and cultures. Our faculty brings international industry experiences and professional credentials in sustainability and design for health and wellness to class projects and working with clients on real-world projects. The program holds accreditations from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD).
The Master of Interior Architecture degree granted by California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and UCLA Extension meets the educational requirement for eligibility to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination (NCIDQ Exam). Building on prior learning and professional practice experience, this module aims to reinforce the use of materials and technologies for the architectural construction and operation of interiors. You will critically review concepts of design thinking and the processes and practice of brief-led design and embed environmental and performance issues in the architectural construction and use of interiors. You will be able to strengthen your contextual and critical basis of design and its analysis and interpretation as well as synthesise the communication and representation of architectural interiors in a range of media.
Based on our leafy north London campus, you are only a short tube ride away from central London where you will be inspired by its many fabulous and interesting spaces, both ancient and modern. In the living room of her Paris apartment, designer Jessica Helgerson mixes vintage French chairs, a Guillerme et Chambron cocktail table, a chandelier from her Roll & Hill collection, and an antique lacemaker’s table. Victorian architecture featured gothic features such as spires, buttresses, and pointed arches.
You will be supported, mentored, and challenged as you enhance your technical skills and critical perspectives in a rigorous, inspiring studio setting. Neither subject is ‘harder’ as such; it depends on what you’re good at, and what you enjoy. The jobs may involve a lot of similar skills and day-to-day tasks, but they are not the same. Interior designers have a more aesthetic focus, whereas interior architects must consider both aesthetics and building structure.
